How to ‘Eat Locally’ in Winter

December 9, 2011

You can still get your “rainbow” of nutrients in winter, but sometimes it’s tough to know what’s in season. It’s always best to eat seasonal produce as this will be your freshest, most nutrient-packed choice. But, seasonal doesn’t mean you have to forgo your summer favourites. Produce like tomatoes and cucumbers can be grown locally, and year-round with greenhouses – like ours, for instance.

Too Much Sitting Tied to Markers of Cancer Risk

November 23, 2011

Recent findings add to a growing body of research indicating that prolonged sitting has lethal consequences, regardless of how active or gym-going you are the rest of the day.

According to the research presented at this month’s American Institute for Cancer Research annual conference, sedentary behaviour, meaning too much sitting still (on the couch, in your car or at your desk), is emerging as a new risk factor for cancer. The research seems to conclude that the longer you sit, the higher your risk of cancer, and U.S. adults (Canada is probably similar), on average, sit 15.5 hours a day. Then add 6-8 hours of lying down for sleep! The amount of time we spend standing up and walking or actually exercising makes up a very small percentage of our lives.

Canadians, Americans, New Zealanders and Australians know it as an eggplant.  To the Brits and the French it's an aubergine. Most believe it is a vegetable but actually it's classified as a type of berry.

My final blog in this three-part series outlines additional efforts consumers are making to eat healthier, as surveyed in “Shopping for Health 2011” a yearly study by the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and Prevention magazine.

Checking the Oil

August 23, 2011 in Friends

Who doesn’t love olive oil? A fine, extra-virgin olive oil paired with a nice balsamic vinegar is so simple and brilliant served with a fresh baguette for dipping, especially when paired with a nice Chianti. If I can offer this bit of advice for your next dinner with friends, never go cheap on the olive oil.

According to “Shopping for Health 2011” a yearly study by the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and Prevention magazine, there is a shift in supermarket aisles across the country. Slammin' Salmon

July 19, 2011 in Recipes

Summer grilling season is in full effect. Everyone is rocking the barbecue with steaks and burgers. I love using the barbecue, not only does the food taste great straight off the grill, it’s a great way to mingle. It gets me cooking outside (which is fantastic) and everyone loves sitting on a patio and having a party. But what often gets lost in red meat heaven is how great fish tastes coming off the grill. Especially our west coast salmon.
