Featured recipe: Escape to Mexico this fall with Chef Dana's Mexican Tomato & Refried Bean Dip. A fiesta of flavor with juicy Virtuoso™ Beefsteak Tomatoes, Maestro™ Sweet Bell Peppers and creamy avocados, chipotle and cilantro, this dip sends your taste buds on a long-overdue vacation. Hopefully, they'll send you a postcard.
Your Health with Registered Dietitian Nanci Guest: Another year at the CANFITPRO conference in Toronto. Amazingly almost 10,000 delegates from across Canada, the US and other countries attended. It's a great way to keep up to date with fitness trends; 400 sessions to attend, in addition to getting an intense workout with the “practical” sessions. I've been a personal trainer for over 16 years now, and I'm always amazed how sore I can get when muscles experience unusually high intensity or abnormal stimulation (doing exercises muscles are not used to). After four workouts over three days I was sore (in a good way). Once again we have good news about post-exercise calorie burn. A new, and very well-controlled study confirms that people who exercise vigorously get a bonus for hard work; they continue to burn extra calories long after they're finished working out. Read more on how to melt the fat away.
Scholars Corner:
In Santa Maria, California (1,900 km south of Delta, British Columbia), construction continues on Windset Farms™ greenhouses in sunny Central Coast California. The greenhouses have already been planted and are scheduled to produce within several weeks. A primary goal when building these new facilities was to use the latest technology to reduce our environmental footprint and leverage sustainability options that didn't exist even five years ago. These are exciting times for us and for our customers. As the world works to feed more people with less land, modern greenhouses continue to deliver fresh wholesome produce with minimal impact on the environment. Visit our Facebook page for updates and photos of these next-generation greenhouses.
Seasonal Ideas: Chef Ned likes a little punch with his Quickles (Quick Pickle, get it?), so he adds a few Gusto™ Hot Peppers. Ned says the little peppers liven up any canned vegetable but we suggest pickling Gusto™ Peppers by themselves as an interesting flavor experiment. Through the pickling process, the piquant of the pepper mellows to reveal a tangy, full-bodied flavor without the burn. Teach a sandwich to bite back with a little peck of pickled pepper. For a pinch of direction, here's a primer:
