Athletes often take high doses of Vitamins A, C, E, and selenium, or other “antioxidant cocktails” to avert pending damage to muscle tissue and hasten muscle recovery. In general, benefits of antioxidant supplementation are not supported in peer-reviewed literature, and many studies report no effect, and often, adverse health effects with higher-dose supplementation are found. However, studies do support health-enhancing effects when consuming diets rich in antioxidants from food sources. Choosing a variety of foods as a source of antioxidants (especially fruits and vegetables) will always be the safest and most beneficial strategy. Furthermore, from the biochemistry of antioxidant action, it is evident antioxidants function in a network and seem to elicit a synergistic effect when consumed as whole foods. In contrast, antioxidants are less effective, and potentially harmful, when administered in isolation (i.e. as supplements). Contest! The Windset Farms™ Jack-O'-Pepper contest is in full swing and there are some talented and strange people out there. Our contest is quickly coming to a close so check out the competition and quickly send in your entry. You have 4 days to get your submission in! FORMAT CHANGE ALERT: Many of our friends have written in to express their concerns about the popular vote format of our contest, suggesting it could be overrun with professional contesters.
So, with this in mind, we are establishing a panel of judges whose task it will be to select a winning entry. Scholar's Corner :
Tis the season...the flu season. Everyone should be diligently washing their hands, covering their face with they cough and loading up on Vitamin C. That means lots of Echinacea, teas, oranges, grapefruits, and sweet red and yellow bell peppers and...what?! Bell peppers are loaded with goodness, especially Vitamin C. A green bell pepper generally has twice as much Vitamin C as an orange. And the sweeter red, orange and yellow peppers have nearly 4 times as much Vitamin C! So load up on the remedies and break up the monotony with a pepper or two. Your aching head/nose/chest will thank you. |
