Toxins in Your Beverages - What Chemicals You Should Look For and Why (1/3)

April 19, 2012

In my continuing talk about food safety, I would like to remind everyone to read food labels carefully. There are many environmental toxins that we cannot avoid such as vehicle pollutants; industrial pollutants and the chemicals used in carpets, paints and plastics. However, what you put into your body is something that you can control and it’s worth the effort to minimize your exposure by ingesting less of these chemicals through your foods and beverages.

How to ‘Eat Locally’ in Winter

December 9, 2011

You can still get your “rainbow” of nutrients in winter, but sometimes it’s tough to know what’s in season. It’s always best to eat seasonal produce as this will be your freshest, most nutrient-packed choice. But, seasonal doesn’t mean you have to forgo your summer favourites. Produce like tomatoes and cucumbers can be grown locally, and year-round with greenhouses – like ours, for instance.

Too Much Sitting Tied to Markers of Cancer Risk

November 23, 2011

Recent findings add to a growing body of research indicating that prolonged sitting has lethal consequences, regardless of how active or gym-going you are the rest of the day.

According to the research presented at this month’s American Institute for Cancer Research annual conference, sedentary behaviour, meaning too much sitting still (on the couch, in your car or at your desk), is emerging as a new risk factor for cancer. The research seems to conclude that the longer you sit, the higher your risk of cancer, and U.S. adults (Canada is probably similar), on average, sit 15.5 hours a day. Then add 6-8 hours of lying down for sleep! The amount of time we spend standing up and walking or actually exercising makes up a very small percentage of our lives.

Healthy Eating

That's Nuts

July 18, 2011 in Friends

There are usually two opinions regarding the health benefits of nuts – they’re fattening stay away from them or they are a convenient snack with a long list of health benefits. So which is it? As a dietitian, a large percentage of my clientele want to a) lose body fat and b) be healthy. So the good news is, it’s not an “either/or” situation. Nuts actually support both goals.

I’ve Lost 10 lbs – Now What?

July 12, 2011 in Friends

It’s always disheartening to see people dedicate months to a strict diet, have great success losing 10-20 lbs, sadly followed by an inevitable re-gain. Why is it so difficult to keep weight off? Weight regain occurs in up to 90% individuals who have successfully lost weight. This received a lot of attention at the last American College of Sport Medicine conference I attended. I’d like to bring more details of the science behind the task of weight maintenance, once weight loss is achieved.

Fat and Sugar Substitutes – No Answer to Fat Loss

July 6, 2011

Although most of us have had successful weight loss at one time or another, it remains very difficult for most people long term. So what do many people do? They look for short-cuts. Sugary foods and beverages definitely contribute to weight gain, so it seemed diet drinks and sugar substitutes would be effective for dieters. However, over the last few years we have seen evidence of the opposite – weight gain or increased appetite - especially in the case of diet soft drinks. Sugar is not the only nutrient we over-consume as a society; too much fat in the diet is also a culprit for many.
